Short Biography

Dr. MinJun Kim is the Robert C. Womack Endowed Chair Professor of Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Southern Methodist University. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Yonsei University in Korea and Texas A&M University, respectively. He earned his Ph.D. in Engineering from Brown University, where he was awarded the prestigious Simon Ostrach Fellowship. Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Kim completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Rowland Institute at Harvard University.

In 2006, he joined Drexel University as an Assistant Professor and rose to the rank of Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics. Dr. Kim’s research focuses on biological transport phenomena, particularly in cellular and molecular mechanics, through the lens of nano- and microscale engineering. His work has led to significant advances in nanobiotechnology, especially in nanopore technology and nano/microrobotics.

Dr. Kim has received numerous prestigious honors throughout his career, including the NSF CAREER Award (2008), Human Frontier Science Program Young Investigator Award (2009), Army Research Office Young Investigator Award (2010), and the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (2011). He is also a recipient of the Drexel Career Development Award (2008), Louis & Bessie Stein Fellowship (2008, 2014), KOFST Fellowship (2013, 2015), and the International Society of Bionic Engineering Outstanding Contribution Award (2013). He has been recognized as a Fellow of ASME (2014), ISBE (2014), AIMBE (2024), and the Royal Society of Chemistry (2024), and was named a Senior Member of both IEEE (2017) and the National Academy of Inventors (2025). Additional honors include the UNESCO/Netexplo Top 10 Technology Innovation Award (2016), the KSEA & KOFST Engineer of the Year Award (2016), the Gerald J. Ford Research Fellowship (2018), the Moody Outstanding Mentor Award (2024), and election as a Fellow and Vice President of the International Academy of Bionic Science (2025). He was also selected as a Protégé of the Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science of Texas (2019) and awarded the Brain Pool Fellowship from the National Research Foundation of Korea (2023).
